Old plastic, reimagined, becomes the furniture of the future
born from used syringes and lightweight toilets designed for the elderly.

Department of Environment Receives Upcycled Table and Chair Set Made from Used Plastic

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of Environment received a set of upcycled tables and chairs made from used plastic from Mr. Parama Linpiyawan, a Grade 12 student and creator of the SmartPlast Thailand Project, which aims to promote sustainability in environmental management and maximize the use of resources.
The handover took place at the Waste Separation Drop-off Point at the Bangkok City Hall (Din Daeng) to support the #MagicHandBangkok campaign under the theme “Separate to Give… for Our Street Sweepers.” The set will be used in various activities organized by the Department of Environment.
Each set of tables and chairs was upcycled from sterilized plastic syringes, ensuring safety and hygiene with no risk of infection or contamination. The furniture is made from polypropylene (PP) plastic, with each set using 9.6 kilograms of plastic, equivalent to approximately 4,800 syringes.

“Magic Hand Bangkok: Separate to Give… for Our Street Sweepers” Project
This project is an extension of the successful campaign “Separate Bottles to Help Doctors – You Can Also Donate to BMA.”
The Department of Environment collaborates with multiple partners and waste-reduction networks, including Less Plastic Thailand, the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI), PPP Plastics, the WON Project, the Thailand Institute of Packaging and Recycling Management for Sustainable Environment (TIPMSE), YOUเทิร์N by GC, and Z-Safe.
The initiative expands the effort from supporting healthcare workers to other professions, enabling them to perform their duties more safely.
The core concept of Magic Hand Bangkok is to encourage everyone to manage waste responsibly both at home and in public spaces through the “magic hands” of every citizen. Collected plastic materials are upcycled into reflective PPE suits for street sweepers to wear while working.

Send 6 Sets of Upcycled Chairs to Underprivileged Elderly Turning 57,600 Grams of Plastic into Social Impact

Mr. Parama Linpiyawan, a Grade 12 student from International Community School (ICS Bangkok) and founder of the SmartPlast Thailand Project, donated 6 sets of upcycled chairs made from sterilized used plastic syringes to support elderly residents in an underprivileged community.

Each furniture set was made from polypropylene (PP) plastic, using 9.6 kilograms of material per set equivalent to 4,800 plastic syringes. In total, this donation represents 57,600 grams (57.6 kilograms) of recycled medical-grade plastic transformed into safe, useful, and meaningful furniture for community use.

I want plastic waste that people often see as worthless to gain a new life one that truly helps others, especially the elderly who need care and comfort,”
Parama Linpiyawan, Founder of SmartPlast Thailand

Furniture made from recycled plastic pellets

A young student named Parama Linpiyawan grew up in his mother’s clinic.
His mother, a doctor, handled countless medical tools each day

many of them single-use and made of plastic. Among the most common: syringes and injection needles.

Why do we throw them away so easily when they might still have value?

That question didn’t fade away. It turned into energy.
And that energy became the birth of Smartplast.

SmartPlast began by collecting used plastics recycled, cleaned, and reprocessed until they transformed into bold, durable, beautifully designed furniture with a purpose: to do good for the planet.
